I am constructing a blank dash for the 38 Chev to take conventional round gauges, any ideas on the scource of round aftermarket speedos, most of what I have looked at in the wrecking arena are not self contained anymore, that is they are complementary to some other fascia attached to the instrument panel, any leads appreciated..............Frank.

Triumph dolomites had a nice set of individual smiths guages. One of which was a quadrant idiot guage for alternator etc.
Other pommy cars of the 60s and 70s had similar.

I have a nice set of 105 series alfa guages that I'm hanging onto for my next rod. Need to be able to read Itie tho

I was in a workmates Nissan Xtrail a while back and I recall the guages in that were individual and white faced to boot. They were slightly angled cause they were centre mounted but I think you could overcome that.

Thanks for the responses,I am looking for metric,I nearly was tempted to go to the rectangular Hz Holden ,they can be used freestanding but the window is not flat, and the unit would have to be recessed into the dash .,first off the rank will be a looksee at the xtrail...........Frank.

Without any idea how they would convert to a car...

Many motorcycle speedos are round, metric and removable.

I will call a local speedo repair shop on that one Mal,I recall that most car speedos have a "rev factor" which is fairly universal,If the bike units are in that ballpark then they may be a good option................Frank.

Further on this issue ,I have been advised that the bike units are unsuitable,as they run about 1400revs/km.The local speedo repairers actually have an aftermarket electronic item in 3 various diameters 80,85,100mm for around the $320 mark, the sender is another $125 for a Taiwanese unit, and another was a bit dearer.I figure that the electronic unit is able to be cal,d to diff/tyres etc and in the long run would be economical,in time stuffing around with drive gears/camera fines,I will check out the unit and see if the scourcing price can be bettered by brand from other suppliers.Speco Thomas here in Melb who have a range of gauges ,do not do speedos, but inform me that they are exploring the addition to their range of a speedo, more info now for myself and any one else heading down this path..............Frank.

You will find that the 70 to 76 model jaguars have nice smith gauges in them. Speedo and tacho about 4 inches or so across.

Further update on this thread,Burson,s are distributors for VDO units, these are electronic ,with the conventional type face ,85 or 100mm,talking trade prices or the rodder discount scheme was on the $200 mark, will check with VDO now as the sender has to be purchased, they list various, and on the list is A GM unit, questions will centre around a p/n for T300................Frank

I built a Clubman a few years ago and used the VDO speedo.
They had few models, THe normal black faces and a range that were classic style.
They were an electronic unit that was eacsy to calibrate, and used a Hall effect sender at the gearbox.
They a big range of sendre units for all sorts of boxes.

The instrument cluster in my 1954 Plymouth were faded that badly they were unreadable. I grafted a complete dash assembly from a 1957 Chrysler Royal. Very stylish guages but read in M.P.H.

I took the guages to Shepparton speedo service (VDO agent) to have a set of VDO guages grafted in to the original housing. Nice white faced guages with a very sexy green illumenation for night time. Bloke was very helpful even turned off all lights in shop/workshop to demonstrate what colour night time illumenation was.

Bonus with VDO guages is that they can be recallibrated to suit what wheel/tyre combination you are using also they can factor in to suit your diff ratio which is important as an "accurate" speedo is critical with all the speed cameras and radars around today.

Talk to your local VDO agent they are very helpful and not afraid to mix and match to come up with the combination you want.

The cal factor is what instantly won me over on the VDO unit Mick,no stuffing around with drive gears.I am now looking forward to bending up another dash to take the 100mm version...........Frank

I had a look at the Classic Instruments site-

http://www.classicinstruments.net/index.phtml?catid=44

I sent them an email to inquire about a KPH electronic speedo,
And got this reply-

Mark

We do make the Vintage Speedometer in KPH. It is $185.00 and the sending unit is $62.00. Shipping is about $45.00.

We have a dealer in Australia, Classic Precision components telephone#02 9567 6700 , fax 02 9567 6644. They might have what you need in stock.

Sincerely,
Roxie Frezza

The prices above are US dollars, I used a Commonwealth Bank currency converter
And It worked out to- $377.99 Australian.

Any more info on the price of VDO ones?

Yes Spark,I have info on the VDO.Bursons are dealers for the speedos,I did a cost estimate and discussed either trade or Rodder discount scheme, the figure was from memory, $202, 85mm or 100mm size, the catalogue had a number of sensors available,so to determine which one I needed for the T350 I visited Howard instruments in West Heidelberg on my last RDO with the speedo drive gear fitting from the box. They quoted me $132 for the sensor and the keyed adaptor for the drive gear[sensor $128,and $4 for the keyed adaptor].I have to revisit Bursons to match the numbers to the catalogue they have, and of course the price should be reduced..................Frank.
