I recieved the event program in the post yesterday and printed over top of the drags is a huge CANCELLED..Their excuse is " Failure of other parties"...Now here's a question...how long have the organisers known about this?...because if I knew the drags were not going to happen a month ago, I would not have entered....I have to pick my runs and I was tossing up between Crakk and this and since I'm attracted to drags, well Cowra won. I'm rather cynical because the word " Cancelled" was printed onto the flyer in the inital print phase...not stamped after. So 3 days before the event, they drop the bomb...So what has the intenery have for my $100.

Thursday...BYO BBQ and a social golf game.

Friday...Cruise around, R&R; dance, $10 per head...light supper supplied. If you want a meal, then the Cowra Golf Club has reasonable price buffet

Saturday..Show and Shine and a cruise to the local speedway..."FREE"!!!
Nothing organised for Saturday night..free to cruise the streets( gee, thanks)

Sunday Drags..Cancelled...so poker runs and usual site seeing expaditions

Breakfast will be served in the main pavillion 7.30-9.30 each day....Too bad we are all spread over the town and not camping in the show ground...I don't think they will get a lot long queue.

I think this will be the first and last Cowra for me...next year its Crakk or Naranderra.

That's a real shame Pep, but I'd be pretty certain that Nick Rees would have tried his hardest to make it happen. He loves drag racing as much as anyone.

I wonder whether it was the old Public Liability story or maybe the venue had a change of heart. Sucks either way.

Do they have a set of traffic lights in Cowra?

Yeah....but don't you think they would have sorted that out a long time ago....I reckon it was pulled a fair time back and they knew there would be a revolt if they publiced it and the entry level would have been way down.

I'm certain there will be some unorganised derbs...its just a shame it will probably draw the crabs.

At the last DC meeting Nick (or was it Ray?) mentioned that the drags had been cancelled (can't remember why) but were back on. Maybe you've got an old program.
Give Ray or Nick a call.

The 1999 CRAKK run was to include the drags that we had run for many years, with huge success. It was the highlight of the event. About 8 days before the event, the drag club informed us that the ACT Gummint would not renew the lease (the nitro funny car event the week before had been cancelled because of the gummint screw-up) but they were negotiating a weekend lease for us. The gummint would not allow it, but they waited until the last minute to let the drag club (and us) know.
The CRAKK run that year nearly put me in the giggle-factory. I ended up calling a meeting on the third day (the Saturday) to lay down the law on the fuckwits that insisted on having their own drag meeting on the access roads. I asked all respective club delegates/officials to "councel" their members. I am the greatest drag racing fan of all, and I always looked forward to running my rod down the strip, but I would NEVER carry on like some of these fools did. The cops were constantly being called by residents and the paranoid park manager, but that didn't stop the idiots. Some of them were very prominent rodders who should have known better. They no longer come to the CRAKK run because of the "words" that I, and my co-coordinators, had with them.
Of course, it was only a small percentage of entrants that caused the fuss, but it seemed to promote a frenzy of bad behaviour. We had to hire security, we had to send a few entrants packing, and it was the most traumatic experience of my life, and I'm still feeling the effects.
Cancelling the drags is out of the hands of the organisers. They did not do it on purpose, and they would have followed all possible alternatives to make it happen, but they obviously ran out of ideas.
What's my point?
DON'T TAKE IT OUT ON THE ORGANISERS, they did their best.
Behave yourselves at the event, as you will only shit in your own nest and you will be forever branded as a fuckwit if you bag 'em up in some form of childish retaliation. I'm not talking about you, Pep, I know you are a great bloke and a responsible rodder but Nick and Ray need SUPPORT, and anyone who goes to Cowra should give it to them, in spades, whether the drags are on or not. Christ knows we need more good events to go to, but without someone to do the work, what are we left with? The experience they gain from this will strengthen their resolve to put the drags on next time, because they know what it will take, but if they don't get the SUPPORT from this year's event, then you can say goodbye to it forever!

I know I will still have a good time...that bloody band better be good ....My point is that the entry price is way over the top for what they are offering....If they mentioned a charity then I'd be a lot happier. I still get the vibe that the drags were pulled a while back, or at least not organised way back and it fell through. I know there are many rodders that were going primarily for the drags....Still...I get to drive the old rod on a road trip and kick back with some mates..it will be a break from toiling away in the garage.

I spoke to Nick at the CRAKK run, and told him what I thought about his run. For my money, it was not worth going, as it appeared you got next to nothing for your $100. However, he proceeded to regale me with a list of things they had organised which made me feel I had been a bit hasty in my pre-judgement.
"Fine", I said, "but why didn't you indicate this on the entry form or the advice sheet?"
"Because then it wouldn't be a SURPRISE!"
Let's see what people have to say after the event.

Hmmm...I know, the drags are really on....so I better take my helmet!
or..the giveaway is a 32 roadster...or they know its nearly my birthday and everyone is going just to surprise me or they just want me out of the garage for a few days so the garage fairies can finish of my 37....or....shit I don't know....I'm still guessing the surprise will there is nothing more than what they have indicated, but that will be no surprise ..I let you know when I get back..I'll even take a picture of it!

somehow I think the SURPRISE will be to not see steam rising from your ears pep.

I hope it is a good weekend. But just remember if you go with a pissed off attitude it is going to be harder to enjoy it from the start, as choco has said before, if there is another rodder there then its going to be ok

I think it does suck, but I'm sure the event organisers are more pissed than you, as its their ears that are burning and their backs that are stinging.

I know if I was in their position and had advertised said drags, I would all but barter my first born to make sure its going to happen, because like you said, people just will vote with their tyres...

Hi Pep, was great to see you at Cowra on the weekend.

We left Dubbo at 7am for a day run over to Cowra, specifically to watch the drags, wasn't until we stopped at Wellington that one of the other rods travelling with us informed us that the drags had been cancelled - disappointing to say the least, but we forged onto Cowra anyway.

The reason we did not go for the whole weekend was because we felt for the $100 entry, a T-Shirt and a sausage sizzle was not good value for money, but with over 200 entrants, it was obvious others were happy to pay the money. One of the other rods that travelled from Dubbo with us stayed on at Cowra with the impression that the main street was going to be closed off for night crusing (like they do at Naranderra), not sure if that was the case or not.

I was also surprised that the Show n Shine being on from 11am to around 2pm and there was not one sign of anyone selling cold drinks, hotdogs or the like at the grounds. We had to walk up into the main area of town to be able to buy a bottle of water and get some lunch.

But despite the downside, some beautiful cars were there, the grounds were the show n shine was held was a fantastic venue and the weather was perfect.

cheers
Tanya

It was good to see you and Terry as well...Your 34 is looking real nice ...especially with the new wheels...I will get the pics up on my web site when I can get time. I can assure you that if I was given more notice that the drags were not on I would have not gone either and there were many there that felt the same. Now I've been I won't go again unless things get better. I didn't see value for my $100 either. The band was ordinary and only played for a short time on the Friday night and only about 6 songs on Sunday night. I guess I can't grumble too much about the Friday night seeing Marg and me won a bottle of wine for best dancers on the floor. It probably wasn't worth as much as the $20 admission we paid to get in. The show and shine was not organised very well. It was not mentioned anywhere that it was being held at that oval. Everyone assumed it was at the showground where everything else was. Even on the day they didn't have anyone directing traffic flow into the grounds. It was a fee for all. They also missed out on catering like you said. It would have been oportune to give some of the $20,000 they raked in to give a bit back to the entrants.
I came home to rip out the kitchen and do the plumbing and electrical....gotta keep on Marg's good side with a new kitchen so I can spend more time and dough on the 37 .
