Guys, would like some suggestions for a suitable engine and gearbox to slot into my Lotus Special. Car uses a Lotus Europa chassis (mid engine with gearbox behind the engine). Original engine was a little 1600 Renault running through a 4 speed Renault box. Now there is room for a bigger engine (in UK they use the Alfa Romao 2 litre V6) but I was considering one of the nicer hi-tech Jap 4 in lines or V6 engines into it. Question is what do I use for the gearbox/transaxle then? Ideas????

Ask at this site
They have a section devoted to middies.
One of the blokes there has a nice little homebuilt that uses a Toyota MR2 engine.
Just about and FWD unit would do.
Depending on how much room you have width wise I'd go for a 2L from an early WRX, pre 96. They mod the gearbox so that it only drives outa the side shafts only or you could use a 2WD box.
The engine is very short at under 400mm but very wide at 850mm.
You can get a complete halfcut in Brizvegas for under 2grand.
At 240hp at the back wheels I reakon that's good value.

The MR2 sounds like a good suggestion. Be careful using a FWD set up behind the driver with locked hubs. This was the setup in my Nota Fang (Clubman style roadster with a mid-mounted 1400cc Mini engine and gearbox). The Fang has locked steering arms to the standard Mini front hubs (now on the back of course), but the slack around the joints allows toe-in under power, and toe-out under lift-off or brakes. That means if you power off in a corner you get instant oversteer. Very exciting .
