He's some interesting statistics that I read in the paper the other day. There are 3.7 million light vehicles registered in NSW and of these 42,500 are known by the RTA to have what they term major modifications. You could only speculate on the number of illegally modified vehicles out there, but it must be about double that figure. Imagine what sort of political clout you would have if you could unite them all behind one lobby group.
How is it that a rag tag fractious group like the greenies can put aside enough of their differences to form a political party when many of us modified vehicle owners wouldn't even cross the street to talk to each other?
Speaking of greenies, have you seen their policies on urban air quality and transport. www.nsw.greens.org.au/
I bet they wouldn't mind seeing us rodders on the endangered species list. Let's hope the Labor party doesn't give them too many concessions in order to win a few marginal seats at the upcoming state elections.

You nailed it in one, mate!
It's terribly frustating to know that rodders, on the one hand, bitch about the difficulties with rego and the unfair bureaucracy, yet because of the "politics" and structure of clubs and/or associations, won't get behind the rest of the rodders around the country in an effort to turn the tide. I have made it abundantly clear to greenies that the books and articles I write on Electronic Fuel Injection are aimed more at environmental issues than traditional hot rodding, and that's the truth. To protect our hobby, we need to address these issues, and this is my way of making headway. The time will come when we will all have to pass the "sniffer" test, and if you aren't on LPG or EFI, you won't get through. Wouldn't it be a good compromise if we can build whatever we want with freedom from persecution, provided we pass a smog test? I assure you, a blown hemi running EFI will pass! For those that don't pass, some measure of restriction may have to apply.
Just thinking out loud here, and being the Devil's advocate.
Not all greenies are radical, most "closet" greenies I know are reasonable and approachable. It's the dreadlocked, tree hugging, anti-car-fuel-motorsport-roads, bike riding, politically correct, vegetarian, G8 poofters that we can't ever hope to please. However, if we make enough of an impact with issues about environmentally friendly hot rodders, imagine the support we could potentially get from the mainstream, closet greenies and politicians? Just don't tell them that our environmentally friendly Hemi makes 500HP!!!

They (the RTA) have lots of data. All of this is available as published documents. A lot of research was done 10 years ago. Also the ARRB is continually researching all aspects of transportation. Some of the most revealing figures are the kms driven by vehicles as they age. I haven't got the figures at hand (have them at home) but suffice to say that a 20 year old car, on average, only travels very limited mileage.

One of the great 'cons' is that we should get rid of these 'polluters' and buy new, cleaner cars. It doesn't stack up environmentally. It takes more energy to produce the new car than the old one would use in it's remaining life. The other problem is, of course financial, as the depreciation rates on the new cars over the first three years is staggering!

We need to be organised and better infomed. We can use their own information to shoot holes in their arguements. Of course, you also need to be aware that the 'agenda' may not be environmental in the first instance, it could be about selling new cars.

The RTA is full of people, mostly very reasonable people I might add. They bring their own skills, knowledge to the job, but they also bring their own prejudices. They are also affected by pressures, mainly from politicians.
